This was my first time attending the Newport Beach Film Festival, courtesy of a friend. I just got back from the Opening Night Movie and Gala. The opening movie was a charming, simple comedy called Sherman's Way that kind of reminded me of an 80's coming-of-age movie, but modernized...The movie was shown at the Big Newport on an HD projector at 1080p (awww yeah, geek out!), which the festival claims is a first for any film festival. I'm kind of an HD aficionado, so that was pretty cool. I would have thought it would've been a bit blurrier on such a huge screen, but it looked nice.Afterwards, there was a "gala" at Fashion Island, complete with a fashion runway and free food and booze. I kinda was too far away to see the models on the runway, and well...being a yelper, I wanted to attack the food, which was provided by several restaurants. Free food and booze is always good!yelp 5 stars

Very well-organized event that utilized the space surrounding the theater nicely. Never felt herded like a cow. One place to purchase and a short walk to the entry point. Separate information tent. Lots of volunteers guiding and answering random questions. Can't wait for next year.yelp 5 stars
